My final year project involved researching different bookstores and cafes in order to create a brand identity for my own bookstore /cafe using an existing floorplan situated within a mall. My brand idea was to create educational cafe hubs.
My design combined both the cafe and bookstore within the space making maximum use of the double-height provided whilst also offering additional services.
The idea was to create a space with multiple synergized uses. In South Africa where some books are too expensive for purchase, students/ developers could pay a fixed fee to use the reference books available for research as well as providing areas that could be rented for collaborative work. This emulates the Amazon model where expensive medical textbooks or educational books can be rented online. With many lower-income families unable to access the internet facility this new concept forms a hub, providing students and the wider population, e.g. Unisa students or people trying to self-educate themselves with a local library/coffee shop/ research hub. For those financially able to purchase books, this is also an option. By providing the cafe within the store makes it a comfortable space to work whilst also adding additional income. By providing a play station with internet connectivity another groups of people (particularly families with children requiring resources for projects) will be
